Dr. Roberto Romero receives the International Arnaldo Bruno Prize from the National Academy of Lincei
Roberto Romero, MD, D.Med.Sci., Chief of the Pregnancy Research Branch of NICHD/NIH, received the International Arnaldo Bruno Prize from the National Academy of Lincei in Rome, Italy. Founded in 1603, the Academy is one of the oldest scientific societies in the world and has included among its members, Galileo Galilei, Albert Einstein, Louis Pasteur, and Max Planck among others.
Dr. Romero was recognized for his discovery of the role of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the onset of labor and pioneering contributions to the diagnosis and treatment of ectopic pregnancy, prenatal diagnosis of congenital anomalies, prediction and prevention of preterm labor, and other great obstetrical syndromes which have changed the daily practice of medicine. An author of more than 1,300 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Romero's work has been cited over 179,000 times (Google Scholar) and he has an h-index of 198 (Google Scholar).
He has been a member of the SRI for over three decades and has been a recipient of the Society's "Distinguished Scientist Award" and "Presidential Achievement Award". Dr. Romero said that many of his discoveries were initially presented at the SGI/SRI Meetings and many of his collaborations were born during the Annual Meetings including those with Dr. Jerome F. Strauss III, Dr. Linda Giudice, Dr. Murray Mitchell, Dr. Mark Phillippe, and Dr. Felice Petraglia. Dr. Romero is also Editor-in-Chief for Obstetrics of the premier academic journal in the discipline, the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology (ranked in the 1st percentile). The journal is over 150 years old, with a circulation of 41,000 in the United States, and has published work that has the changed the lives of mothers and children in the last century
