Emmanuel Amabebe, PhD

Career Journey

Dr. Amabebe is a Researcher at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston where he investigates the molecular pathways in gestational tissues and body fluids that underpin preeclampsia, preterm birth and other adverse reproductive outcomes. Dr. Amabebe is part of the Menon laboratory, which is a scientific consortium committed to resolving the complications of women’s reproductive health. He is also a Honorary Researcher at the University of Sheffield, UK, where he is part of a team that have identified some vaginal bacterial species, metabolites and immune proteins that are associated with spontaneous preterm birth with probable prognosticative capacities in both limited and high resource settings. Dr Amabebe also engages in teaching reproductive biology and physiology to both undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as supervision of research projects required for the award of Bachelors and postgraduate degrees.

1. What inspired you to choose reproductive sciences?

The need to solve women’s reproductive health problems from preconception to postnatal period


2. Favorite part of your job?

Knowing that my work contributes to saving the lives of mothers and their babies in my community and around the world.


3. How did you hear about SRI?

I heard about SRI from Professor Dilly Anumba who was my PhD supervisor at the University of Sheffield, UK.


4. What makes SRI your scientific home and how has it helped your career?

SRI is my scientific home because of its global outlook and reach. SRI has helped me to meet and collaborate with other researchers around the globe..


5. Favorite benefit of SRI?

SRI International Training Grant (2020-2021), which helped me to gain a Visiting Scientist role at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Texas, USA under the supervision of Professor Ramkumar Menon.
