Eli Adashi, MD
SRI President, 1999-2000
The 47th annual scientific meeting of the SGI in Chicago was all about the new millennium. Not surprisingly, the leading theme was “A Millennial Milestone for Reproductive Sciences: Celebrating the Promise.” A futuristic opening reception took place in the recently renovated Chicago Adler Planetarium on the shore of Lake Michigan. The meeting proper took place at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers at the Cityfront Center. All past Presidents of the SGI have been invited personally by Dr. Adashi to attend this unique inaugural millennial meeting. Apart and distinct from the traditional abstract presentations and the customary (four) Satellite Meetings, special guest lectures featured Leroy E. Hood, PhD, MD (University of Washington) and Raymond L. White, PhD (University of Utah). Special plenary lectures were delivered by Steven L. McKnight, PhD (University of Texas), Mario R. Capecchi, PhD (University of Utah), John D. Gearhart, PhD (Johns Hopkins University), Patricia K. Donahoe, MD (Harvard University), Robert A. Steiner, PhD (University of Washington), and Mary Claire King, PhD (University of Washington). Other noteworthy features included a Symposium titled “Estrogen 2000: The Past, Present, and Future,” an “NICHD Forum,” a total of seven Mini Symposia, and four sessions dedicated to the accomplishments of the AAOGF, RSDP, SGO, and SMFM. Finally, the meeting also served as the home for a Symposium titled “Fundamental Mechanisms in Reproduction” in honor of Samuel S.C. Yen, MD. The Presidential Address, delivered on March 24, 2000, was later published in the Journal of the Society for Gynecologic Investigation [Adashi EY. Presidential Address. J Soc Gynecol Invest 7(4):206-210, 2000]. Note is also made of the fact that prior to the 2000 annual meeting in Chicago, the SGI featured, likely for the first time, a special international meeting titled “Reproductive Sciences 2000: Technology in the Service of Biology” at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center in Salt Lake City, Utah (February 23-26, 2000) wherein Dr. Adashi was serving as the John A. Dixon Presidential Endowed Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
