Rogerio Lobo, MD
SRI President, 1997-1998
A few random thoughts – hard to remember back so far and I have some notes, but not everything.
In those days, one of the major tasks of the SGI President was to fund raise for his/her year – this was long before the Corporate Board etc. We were well in the “black” in those days and it fell on the President to add to this and run a financially successful meeting by fund raising. I feel I was successful and raised approximately 300K on my own by calling, twisting arms and visiting a number of companies talking about SGI.
I also visited our offices at ACOG (at that time) to negotiate a better rent deal with Ralph Hale. With our resources I initiated giving out money for research – I think this was the first year we had grants available including an initiative to offer summer stipends to medical students to work in Reproduction.
My year was also the last that I can remember which held to the SGI tradition of the President offering some entertainment at the Banquet. My year was in Atlanta, so I dressed up and did a parody on “Gone with the Wind” with film clips etc.
